Is there such thing as a ‘typical’ career path for art librarians? What common threads beyond workplace setting unite art librarians as a distinct profession? This presentation discusses the results of an international survey of art library workers, including: motivation for selecting the profession, educational background, current employment, and professional experiences. Reviewing the preparation and job experiences of other practitioners in art librarianship allows us all to benefit from a deeper knowledge of the current state of the profession.

Stephen Manes has written more than thirty books and hundreds of articles in a long career of making arcane worlds accessible to the uninitiated.  His columns on personal technology have appeared in The New York Times, Forbes, PC World, PC Magazine, and other publications.  Manes also was a creator and co-host of the weekly public television series “Digital Duo.”  His books include the biography, Gates: How Microsoft’s Mogul Reinvented an Industry—and Made Himself the Richest Man in America (1994).  Manes is also well known for his works for children and young adults, including: Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days! (1996) and its sequel, Make Four Million Dollars by Next Thursday (1996).

Are you interested in presenting at Midwinter but won’t be able to make it to Dallas?  Sharing your experiences with fellow members in the Arts Section’s Virtual Discussion Forum is a great way to participate!

• Presentations can be on any topic pertaining to the arts or design (see list of possible topics below). It can be a project that you are currently working on or research you are engaged in.
• There is no requirement for presenters to register for Midwinter nor do presenters need to be Arts Section members to participate. Students are also encouraged to make a submission.
• Presenters need to be available on Wednesday, January 18, 2011 at 2-3PM EST.  Each presentation will be 10-15 minutes with a short Q&A after.

Please email your proposals to Yvette Cortes (ycortes@skidmore.edu). The deadline for submissions is Monday, December 19th. Chosen presenters will be notified shortly after.

Possible topics:

• Research of any topic related to the arts
• Developments in the display and/or preservation of arts materials
• Innovative information literacy or visual literacy techniques with arts students
• Emerging technologies in arts libraries
• Inventive collection management and development in the arts
• Strategies for reaching out to arts users (students and faculty)
• Copyright and fair use in the arts environment
• Evaluating the needs of arts users
• Use of images in information literacy instruction
• Creative physical or online/virtual exhibits

…and maybe you’re wondering how you can help to keep this momentum going.  Well, if you’ve been active with the Section, seriously consider putting yourself forward for nomination as a candidate for Arts Section Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect in the 2012 ALA elections.

 The successful candidate will become Section Vice-Chair at the close of the 2012 ALA Annual Conference, will become Chair at the close of the 2013 Annual Conference, and will continue on the Executive Committee for an additional year as Immediate Past-Chair.

 Any member of the Nominating Comittee will be happy to answer any questions you have. If you’re interested in nominating yourself (or someone else) please send an email to hemmigw@bucks.edu and include a brief summary of your/her/his previous activity with Arts.

Please excuse the late notification about the upcoming meeting, which will be taking place as scheduled, on Saturday, June 25, 2011, from 1:30-3:30 pm.  More details about the location, etc. can be found on the Conference Scheduler page.

Although I will not be able to attend this year’s ALA Annual Meeting in New Orleans, Kathleen Haefliger has graciously agreed to lead the Dance Librarians Discussion Group meeting in my absence.

In lieu of a formal agenda, you are invited to bring your own ideas for discussion topics to the meeting.  To get the conversation started, here also are some of the topics from our most recent past meetings that it would be great to see develop into full fledged projects:

• Outreach with library schools and/or dance departments to develop training opportunities for students with an interest in dance librarianship, archives, and history.

• A review feature on recent dance on film and video created by DLDG for publication in Booklist, C&RL News, or some other venue.

I also tried to arrange for an online chat with Jennifer Homans, author of Apollo’s Angels: A History of Ballet to take place during ALA week, but, unfortunately, she was unavailable this month due to travel and other commitments.  However, she is enthusiastic about communicating with the group and has agreed to an do an interview in late July.  Please send in any ideas for interview questions or your comments about the book as a reply to the discussion page.
